Ulaanbaatar, formerly named Khoree, is the capital and most populous city of Mongolia. It has a
population of 1.67 million, and is the coldest capital city in the world by average yearly temperature.
The city is located in north central Mongolia at an elevation of about 1,300 metres in a valley on
the Tuul River and at the southwestern edge of the Khentii Mountains.
The city at its establishment in 1639 was referred to as Örgöö or Urga, and by 1651 known as Khuree. Upon
independence in 1911, with both the government and the Bogd Khan's ("Holy Ruler") palace present, the
city's name was changed to Niĭslel Khüree ("Capital Khüree"). When the city became the capital of the
new Mongolian People's Republic on 29 October 1924, its name was changed to Ulaanbaatar ("Red Hero"),
in honour of Damdin Sükhbaatar, the Mongolian revolutionary, founder of the Mongolian People's
Party, and leader of the Mongolian partisan army that took Khüree during the Mongolian Revolution of 1921.
Ulaanbaatar's Sükhbaatar Square was a major site of demonstrations that led to Mongolia's
transition to democracy and market economy in 1990, after the collapse of the Soviet economy. Since
then, Ulaanbaatar has developed quickly in a "mini-boom", and the expressive freedom of the new
generations have now stimulates arts, music, as well as a new-found interest in Mongoila's history,
suppressed in Soviet times.
Today the city blends newly-established museums and vibrant bars and restaurants with legacy
temples and palaces.
